Mercedes-Benz and NVIDIA are deepening their relationship. On October 16, 2026, NVIDIA announced an expanded strategic partnership with Mercedes-Benz AG to develop next-generation driver assistance and automated driving systems.
What the expanded deal covers
The expansion builds on work the two companies have already shipped. Two vehicles anchor that work: the all-new CLA and the new S-Class.
The CLA began rolling out in 2026 with NVIDIA DRIVE AV software. In the US, it offers what the companies describe as Level 2++ driver assistance, including advanced point-to-point assistance.
The S-Class aims much higher. It carries what the companies call an L4-ready architecture, built on NVIDIA Hyperion and full-stack DRIVE AV L4 software.
Level 4 is the tier where a vehicle can handle driving on its own within defined conditions. The key word in the S-Class description is “ready.” The hardware and software foundation is in place, positioning the car for potential robotaxi services rather than promising them today.
That robotaxi angle has a named partner. The research describes potential robotaxi applications specifically in collaboration with Uber.
The software stack under the hood
NVIDIA’s contribution goes beyond chips. The company is supplying its Alpamayo family of open AI models, along with simulation tools and redundant safety architectures.
All of this feeds into MB.OS, the Mercedes-Benz operating system platform. The developments are framed as a major step forward for that platform and for Mercedes’ push into software-defined vehicles.
A software-defined vehicle is one whose features live largely in code. That allows over-the-air updates, meaning the car can gain improvements through downloads.
A long relationship, and not an exclusive one
The Mercedes-Benz and NVIDIA partnership dates back to around 2020-2021, when the focus was AI-based ADAS software.
Mercedes is also not putting every bet on one table. The automaker is running parallel efforts with other partners, including Momenta and Wayve.
What this means for the industry
The research suggests the collaboration could help Mercedes gain market share by strengthening its standing on advanced safety and AI integration. The emphasis on redundancy, safety mechanisms and continuous upgrades aligns with evolving global regulatory frameworks.
There are open questions worth tracking. The S-Class architecture is L4-ready, but readiness and deployment are different milestones. The pace at which potential robotaxi services with Uber move from concept to street will be a meaningful test of the partnership.
