The San Francisco 49ers’ Super Bowl hopes feel well within reach.
San Francisco is 6-0 to start the season and has produced several impressive wins against NFC West rivals.
It feels like the only thing that might hold the 49ers back is injuries, of which there have been many. Their wide receiver room in particular has been severely impacted.
The most recent of these is the Achilles tendinitis that forced Mike Evans to miss the second half of San Francisco’s win against the Washington Commanders this past weekend.
49ers GM John Lynch spoke with KNBR on Thursday morning and answered several question about Evans.
“I wouldn’t say not likely. I think it’s still TBD,” Lynch said of Evans’ status for their game against the Atlanta Falcons this weekend.

“We’ve got a couple more days and we’re gonna take every bit of those to ascertain where Mike is at. He’s done a really good job treating this thing. Obviously, we know of Mike’s toughness. We’ll let these next couple days play out and make a decision when we have to. Mike’s that type of player that you wait, you let the process play out, and we’ll see where we’re at at the end of the week,” he added.
Evans has 27 receptions for 420 receiving yards and three touchdowns this season. He has been San Francisco’s best and most consistent receiver this year, despite being 33 years old.
Lynch was asked whether the upcoming bye week impacts whether San Francisco will play Evans against the Falcons and said, “You try to win every game in this league, so if our players are healthy and we feel good about their ability to not put themselves in more harm and go effect the game in a positive way, that’s what you do in this league. I’ll just leave it at that.”
Lynch was then asked whether he understands fans wanting to rest Evans because it’s more important for him to be healthy in January than right now.
“I love our fans, the Faithful. … Our job is not to focus on the noise, but to focus on what we believe is right for our football team. And that’s what we continue to do,” he responded.
San Francisco’s undefeated record has given them a good cushion in the NFC West. Yet, is the best division in football. The Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams are sure to find their stride at some point.
Therefore, Lynch’s sentiment about having to win every game — and needing every available player on the field for every game — is fair enough.
But if San Francisco does decide to play Evans despite him being less than 100%, and his Achilles injury gets worse and forces him to miss an extended amount of time, the Faithful will look back on Lynch’s comments with frustration.
