KOTA BARU: Pas secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan has written to the Dewan Rakyat speaker proposing mediation to resolve the controversy over his use of the word "munafik" (hypocrite) in Parliament.
Takiyuddin, who is the Kota Baru MP, said he had not withdrawn the remark but had instead proposed mediation as an amicable way to resolve the issue.
"I have not withdrawn it. Instead, I wrote to the speaker proposing that he convene a mediation session.
"The speaker would call Jelutong MP RSN Rayer and me in for a discussion to try to resolve the matter," he told a press conference after the Himpunan dan Munajat Penyatuan Ummah (HIMPAK) gathering last night.
Takiyuddin said the speaker's office had received the letter on Thursday.
"Thursday was supposed to be the deadline, so I sent the letter, which has been received.
"I am now waiting for the speaker's response on whether the proposed mediation will proceed.
"If mediation does not take place, I may be referred to the Committee of Privileges," he said.
Also present were Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and his deputy, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
It was reported that Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul had instructed Takiyuddin to withdraw the word 'munafik', which he used while debating the 2027 Budget last week.
He said Takiyuddin could withdraw the remark either in the Dewan Rakyat or by writing to the speaker.
