Pakistan Customs has ordered a comprehensive audit of pay orders submitted over the past two years at the Azakhel Dry Port in Nowshera after suspected forged documents were discovered in cases involving sales tax exemptions for industrial units in the former FATA and PATA regions, sources informed ProPakistani.
Chief Collector of Customs Appraisement Peshawar Abdul Waheed Marwat has directed the audit.
Three first information reports (FIRs) have been registered in connection with the suspected submission of fake pay orders, with company representatives and customs personnel among those named in the cases.
Documents reviewed in the cases allege that the pay orders were submitted in place of sales tax payments by importers claiming exemptions available to FATA/PATA industrial units.
The cases involve imported coated fabric, LED television parts, and green and black tea.
One case concerns a forged pay order of Rs. 7.55 million against sales tax on imported coated fabric. Another involves an alleged pay order of Rs. 21.17 million linked to imported LED television parts.
The documents also describe a case involving 18 allegedly forged pay orders submitted against sales tax of approximately Rs. 76.38 million on tea consignments.
Banks contacted by customs officials said the pay orders or cheque instruments were fake or had been forged. The allegations include attempts to present the documents as genuine proof of tax payment. The accused have not been convicted so far.
The audit will examine pay orders submitted during the previous two years and the related transactions to establish the extent of the suspected irregularities.
The investigation documents also name customs personnel in connection with certain cases, with further responsibility to be determined during the investigation.
