Jadavpur BJP MLA Sarbori Mukherjee has struck fear into the “tukde tukde gang”, chief minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Monday.
He was apparently referring to the violence at Jadavpur University in August, when alleged supporters of the RSS-affiliated ABVP clashed with students allegedly after Sarbori called for a “tandav” on the campus.
“There is... MLA on the dais. Sarbori Mukherjee. Tukde tukde gang khub bhoy pacchhe Sarbori-di ke dekhe (the tukde tukde gang is very scared of Sarbori-di),” Suvendu said while introducing her at an event in Kudghat, on the city’s southern fringes.
Sarbori folded her hands with a big smile.
On the evening of August 19, an altercation between members of Left student organisations and the ABVP turned violent after an ABVP leader was allegedly assaulted at a general body meeting on the Jadavpur University campus.
Later, alleged ABVP activists returned with reinforcements, many reportedly armed with swords and sticks, and attacked students, some of whom locked themselves inside Aurobindo Bhavan for safety.
Sarbori, a first-time MLA, had threatened a night-long “tandav”, naming the CPM’s student wing, SFI.
“The tukde tukde gang is raising anti-national slogans. What do they think? They will turn the campus into a den for Naxals, anti-nationals? If Srijan Bhattacharya (SFI national secretary) and Sujan Chakraborty (former MP and former Jadavpur MLA) do not make the accused surrender before the police, we will drag them out from wherever they are hiding. A night-long tandav will follow,” she had said.
Sarbori also visited ABVP leader Nikhil Das at a nearby hospital and later accompanied a third-year engineering student to file an FIR at Jadavpur police station.
“I would like to thank the Jadavpur MLA. Tini o Jadavpur ta ke aste aste rashtrabad er line niye aschen (She is gradually bringing Jadavpur on a nationalist track),” Suvendu said on Monday.
In September, Sarbori had said she was a rashtrabadi (nationalist) and would continue to be one.
