Guwahati, Oct 15: Residents of the Northeast seeking to travel abroad will have easier access to visa application services with the opening of the region’s first visa application centre in Guwahati on Thursday.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the facility, established by VFS Global, which will process visa applications for 14 countries, including the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Italy and Switzerland.
The centre will also accept applications for Austria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, Ireland, Latvia, Malta and Morocco.
The facility is expected to ease the burden on applicants from Assam and other northeastern states, many of whom have had to travel outside the region to access visa application services. Its presence in Guwahati could prove particularly convenient for students pursuing overseas education, tourists, business travellers and others planning international trips.
Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog, Transport Minister Charan Boro and Yusmi Talwar, VFS Global’s chief executive officer for South Asia, attended the inauguration. Representatives of the diplomatic missions of Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Italy and France were also present.
The opening marks another addition to Guwahati’s growing role as a regional hub for services and connectivity. With the city serving as a key commercial centre for the Northeast, the new facility is expected to make the initial stages of overseas travel more accessible to people across the region.
HCM Dr. @himantabiswa today inaugurated Northeast India’s first Visa Application Centre in Guwahati, established by VFS Global at Khanapara.
The centre will facilitate visa applications for multiple countries, including Schengen nations, bringing international travel services closer to the people of Assam and the Northeast.

VFS Global provides visa application services on behalf of governments and diplomatic missions. However, the new centre will facilitate the application process rather than decide visa outcomes, which remain the responsibility of the respective countries’ authorised authorities.
Applicants will need to check the authorised service provider’s official channels for appointment bookings, document requirements and applicable service charges.
The centre’s launch comes amid broader efforts to strengthen Guwahati’s infrastructure and services for residents and visitors, further expanding the city’s importance as a gateway to the Northeast.
