Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq is working to enhance its collaboration with Algeria in the natural gas sector as part of its strategy to better utilize its natural resources, particularly associated gas, to maximize economic benefits and minimize waste.
Iraqi Oil Minister Basim Khudair discussed on Monday cooperation opportunities in the hydrocarbons sector with Algerian Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines Mohamed Arkab.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the WPC Energy Congress held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
The discussions focused on leveraging Algerian expertise in the recovering, processing, and utilizing associated gas, as well as developing investment partnerships between oil companies in both countries.
The step takes place as Iraq carries out projects aimed at boosting domestic gas production, reducing gas flaring, and securing additional fuel supplies for power plants.
Developing capabilities for associated gas recovery and processing was a key focus of the Iraqi-Algerian talks, reflecting Baghdad’s interest in maximizing the use of available gas resources.
Both sides emphasized the importance of leveraging Algerian expertise in this field to help improve the utilization of associated gas and increase the value added to hydrocarbon resources.
Baghdad faces challenges related to the flaring of gas associated with oil production, despite possessing resources that could be harnessed to meet some of the needs of the electricity and industrial sectors.
World Bank data indicates that Iraq and Algeria were among the top nine countries globally for gas flaring in 2025, highlighting the importance of developing the necessary infrastructure to capture and process the gas.
Iraq seeks to eliminate gas flaring entirely by the end of 2028 through the execution of various projects.
