The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association girls state golf championships began Oct. 12 with the first of two rounds to determine state team and individual champions at University Ridge in Madison.
Milwaukee-area teams from Arrowhead, Divine Savior Holy Angels, Hartford Union, Homestead, Waukesha South/North/West and Lake Country Lutheran along with other individual qualifiers are among the statewide field.
After 18 of 36 holes complete, here are the Milwaukee-area storylines to follow headed into Day 2. The second and final day of WIAA state golf will begin with morning tee times Oct. 13.
Divine Savior Holy Angels leads D1 in quest for four-peat
The three-time reigning state champion DSHA Dashers (323) lead the D1 field by eight strokes as they set their sights on WIAA history.
Junior Addison Roesch is leading the Dashers with a 75, followed by junior Julia Sortino (76), senior Zoe Gryniewicz (83), junior Whitney Kelly (89) and junior Julia Krueger (90).
Coming in behind DSHA among state-qualifying teams are DeForest (331), Bay Port (336), Waukesha South/North/West (336), Homestead (345), Kaukauna (346), Arrowhead (353), Middleton (356), Hartford Union (362), Hudson (375), Prescott (375) and Westosha Central (391).
Waukesha South/North/West's Piacsek among individual D1 leaders
McKenna Nelson, the 2024 state champion from Beaver Dam, is the individual D1 leader after her first-round score of 69. Reagan Piacsek of Waukesha is tied with DeForest's Brinley Goninen at 71 for second place entering Day 2.
Also in the top-10 race for the individual title locally are Homestead sophomore Lola Appleby (fourth, 73), Arrowhead junior Addison Johannes (fifth, 74), DSHA's Roesch (T-sixth, 75), Cedarburg senior Lindsey Kroening (T-ninth, 76) and DSHA's Sortino (T-ninth, 76).
LCL's Molaison leads D2 with only under-par round
Lake Country Lutheran junior Aubrey Molaison finished tied for state runner-up last year, and has positioned herself nicely to climb the leaderboard for a gold medal this year. A 2-under-par first round of 70 leads D2 individuals by five strokes. Parkview freshman Taytum Oswald is her closest competitor after Day 1 after shooting a 75.
Molaison birdied both par-5 holes on the back nine as part of a five-birdie opening round. Sophomore Nora Roehl (91), junior Eden Mueller (94), sophomore Molly Hoff (115) and sophomore Amelia Dyrud (118) round out Day 1 for the Lightning.
LCL as a team sits fourth in the program's state debut at 370 strokes, coming in ahead of St. Croix Central (371) in fifth and Colfax/Elk Mound (395) in sixth. Edgerton (342), Edgewood (355) and Seymour (359) are the leading contenders among D2 teams entering Day 2.
