Rachel Berry is ready to collect another gold star.
“Glee,” the cult TV musical series from Ryan Murphy, is returning, Disney+ and Hulu announced in a social media post on Wednesday.
The series, which aired on Fox from 2009 to 2015, followed the fictional New Directions show choir at McKinley High School as they sang their way through love, heartbreak, bullying, coming out and other high school highs and lows.
It picked up 10 Golden Globe nominations and four wins during its run. The show’s soundtrack also garnered critical acclaim, with many of the covers performed by the cast making the Billboard Hot 100.
In recent years, a new fanbase has also gravitated toward the show, which streamed on Netflix after it aired on Fox. On TikTok, millions of “Gleeks” continue to share clips and
The news of its return comes just weeks after the showrunner teased the possibility of a reboot, telling Entertainment Tonight in September that he had “just finished” a script.
“Brad [Falchuk], Ian [Brennan] and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something,” Murphy said. “I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”
Online, fans couldn’t contain their enthusiasm, cracking jokes about what storylines Murphy should tackle in 2026 and brainstorming their dream covers and guest stars, including Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, Taylor Swift and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
While the show is beloved, its legacy has also been marred with a series of tragedies and controversies, both on and off screen.
Many fans, old and new, have pointed out on social media that some storylines on the show were “problematic” or “cringe.” They cited some of the performances, including those featuring the show choir’s teacher, Mr. Schuester, singing sexually suggestive songs to his students.
Additionally, three of the original core cast members have died since the show first aired in 2009.
Naya Rivera, who played cheerleader Santana Lopez, died after accidentally drowning while boating with her 4-year-old son on a California lake. She was 33.
Cory Monteith, who played Glee club co-captain and football team quarterback Finn Hudson, died at 31 in 2013 from a toxic mix of alcohol and heroin.
Mark Salling, who played Noah Puckerman, died in what appeared to be a suicide in 2018 at 35 after pleading guilty to child pornography charges.
Since the show came to an end, “Glee” actors Samantha Ware, Jeanté Godlock, Alex Newell and Dabier Snell accused lead Lea Michele (who played Glee co-captain Rachel Berry) of treating them poorly on the show. In 2020, she issued a lengthy statement on Instagram, where she apologized for her “behavior and any pain” she’s caused.
It’s unclear who from the original cast will return for the reboot.
Michele is reportedly reprising her role as Berry, according to Variety. A representative for Michele did not immediately respond to request for comment.
Former cast members Chord Overstreet, who played Sam Evans, and Heather Morris, who played cheerleader/Glee club member Brittany, hinted on social media that they’d likely be singing with the group once more.
“Reunited and it feels so good!” Overstreet wrote in a post on X on Wednesday.
Morris shared a photo of herself in her Cheerios cheerleader uniform from the series on Instagram.
“Yes ladies and gentle men of women, rumors are true. Brittany S Pierce was in fact lost in the sewers for all these years,” she wrote in the caption. “But I’m here to inform you that she is alive and well…And back for more.”
Many of the cast members have stayed friends.
Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz, whose characters Artie and Tina dated briefly on the show, hosted two “Glee” rewatch podcasts: “Showmance,” which ran from 2019–2020, and “That’s What You REALLY Missed,” which ran from 2022-2025.
McHale recently posted a reunion with co-star Amber Riley, who played Mercedes Jones, after she came to support him at his Broadway show.
Several cast members have also gone on to win Tonys. Darren Criss, who rose to mainstream fame playing Blaine Anderson on the show, has collected both a Tony and an Emmy in recent years.
On Sunday, Criss brought up co-star Chris Colfer onstage during his concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall to perform one of their popular “Glee” duets, a cover of “Baby It’s Cold Outside.”
And that’s what you missed ... on “Glee.”
