The management of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuelumeni, Rivers State, has expelled a final-year student identified as Nora Onyewuenyi over an alleged ‘damaging’ social media post.
The institution also said the student in the Department of English and Literary Studies posted on social media that her project topic was citizenship, even though no such project topic existed, and that her supervisor wrote the project for her.
The institution, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt by its Public Relations Officer, Dr Ngozi Okiridu, on Monday, said the student reportedly admitted her claims were untrue and made only to create social media content.
According to the statement, the institution tried to persuade her to withdraw her comments, but she refused, saying the expulsion was intended to serve as a warning to other students.
The statement reads, “The Senate has expelled Miss Onyewuenyi Chiamaka Nora with Matriculation Number U/2022/19900, a final-year student of the Department of English and Literary Studies, over damaging content creation.
“The expulsion is to serve as a deterrent to others who may want to do the same.
“Recall that the said student had, in an interview that went viral, claimed that her project topic was ‘Citizenship’ when there is no such topic as Citizenship in the Department. She also claimed that her supervisor was the one who wrote the project for her.”
The university’s image maker said the social media post was damaging to the image of the institution, saying such behaviour would not be tolerated.
