The President of the Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA), Martin Momoh Bangura, is facing legal action over allegations that eligible member clubs have been excluded from voting ahead of the association’s elective congress scheduled for December 2026.
The lawsuit, filed at the High Court of Sierra Leone’s General Civil Division and sealed on October 1, 2026, challenges the actions of the association’s president and raises concerns over the alleged violation of the constitutional voting rights of member clubs and their representatives.
The case was brought by Swahib Bangura, who is suing in his capacity as President of the Western Region Athletics Association, and Musa Kalamu Jawara, a club owner in the Western Region and member of the SLAA.
They are seeking legal redress against Martin Momoh Bangura in his capacity as president of the national athletics governing body.
According to the court filing, the applicants are challenging the alleged exclusion of eligible member clubs from participating in the voting process, arguing that the decision deprives qualified delegates of their constitutionally recognised rights ahead of the forthcoming elections.
The legal challenge cites Articles 8.4(a), 8.4(b), 16 and 14.1 of the Constitution of the Sierra Leone Athletics Association 2022, alongside Section 13 of the National Sports Authority of Sierra Leone Act No. 6 of 2017.
The proceedings also refer to resolutions and deliberations from the SLAA Extraordinary Congress held on July 17 and 18, 2026, as well as the processes leading to the elective congress scheduled for December.
The applicants’ action places the association’s electoral arrangements under legal scrutiny, particularly regarding the eligibility of member clubs and the rights of their representatives to participate in choosing the association’s leadership.
The case comes at a critical time for the SLAA as it prepares for its December elections, with the dispute raising questions about compliance with the association’s constitution and the applicable legal framework governing sports administration in Sierra Leone.
Further details, including the response of the SLAA president and the outcome of the proceedings, are expected as the matter progresses through the court.
