The National Advocacy Platform (NAP) has condemned a violent attack on the convoy of former President Lazarus Chakwera and the manhandling of journalists in Blantyre.

In a statement issued in Lilongwe, NAP condemned the attack “in the strongest possible terms”.
The incidents included damage to a vehicle belonging to Moses Kunkuyu, an MP, and the intimidation of journalists Francis Chamasowa and Francis Nkawihe. They took place on Sunday in Blantyre.
“These acts represent a grave assault on human dignity, political tolerance, press freedom and the constitutional foundations of our democracy,” the statement said. “They must never be normalised, excused or tolerated.”
NAP said the violence was particularly troubling because it reportedly happened during the CCAP Blantyre Synod’s 150th anniversary celebrations, an event dedicated to faith, peace and national unity.
The group noted that Chakwera has been targeted before.
Earlier this year, he was attacked during the John Chilembwe Day commemoration at the Providence Industrial Mission in Chiradzulu.
Supporters of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) were reportedly behind the disruption, and security forces moved him away from the event.
NAP said the repeated attacks raised concerns about political intolerance and selective application of justice.
It called on the Malawi Police Service to investigate both incidents swiftly, arrest those responsible and ensure the safety of political leaders and journalists regardless of party affiliation.
