An All Progressives Congress chieftain, Banwo Mayowa, has called for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, urging Nigerians to support policy continuity and allow his administration to consolidate its economic reforms and infrastructure projects.
Mayowa, a former member of the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, made the appeal in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.
He acknowledged that the reforms introduced since May 2023 had imposed significant hardship on households and businesses but argued that the government should be given time to address the country’s structural challenges.
“These decisions have imposed considerable pressure on households and businesses, and the hardship experienced by Nigerians must never be dismissed,” he said.
Mayowa said continuity should not mean unquestioning support for government policies but should involve correcting weaknesses, improving implementation and ensuring that citizens benefit from reforms.
He cited Nigeria’s reported 4.43 per cent gross domestic product growth in the second quarter of 2026, compared with 4.23 per cent in the corresponding period of 2025, while stressing that growth must translate into better living standards.
“The priority must be to sustain growth while ensuring that it translates into stronger purchasing power, more employment, lower production costs, and improved living standards,” he said.
The APC chieftain called for accelerated infrastructure development, particularly in roads, electricity and transportation, alongside transparent procurement and effective use of public funds.
“Nigerians deserve infrastructure that works, not merely announcements of projects,” he added.
On youth empowerment, he urged the government to invest more in technical education, digital skills, vocational training and small businesses to create employment opportunities.
He also identified food affordability and support for vulnerable households as priorities, calling for improved agricultural productivity, storage, transportation and targeted social protection.
“The purpose of economic reform is not to celebrate statistics; it is to improve people’s lives,” Mayowa said.
He cautioned that continuity should not excuse poor performance, urging voters to assess political alternatives based on their policies and capacity to deliver results.
Mayowa, a former personal assistant to the late Dr Doyin Okupe, said Tinubu’s second term should focus on job creation, infrastructure, productive investment, education and accountability.
“For me, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserves the opportunity to consolidate the reforms his administration has initiated,” he said, adding that the next phase should prioritise measurable improvements in citizens’ lives.
