KUALA LUMPUR: A supervisor killed after being hit by a car driven by a man suspected of drink-driving on the Sultan Iskandar Highway early today had been married for just four months.
The victim's father, Fazli Buyong, 56, said his eldest of three children, Faris Irfan, 28, married on June 13.
He said Faris had planned to return home at noon today to cook for the family after finishing work and getting some rest.
"He told us that after finishing work today and sleeping for a while, he would come home at noon and cook for us. Sadly, that was not to be," he told Bernama.
Fazli said the tragedy was even more heartbreaking as Faris' wife had accompanied him to work from 10pm but was waiting in the car when the crash occurred.
He received news of his son's death through a call from his daughter-in-law at 4.20am.
Fazli said Faris and his colleagues were packing up their equipment after completing their work, with only the safety cones left to collect when the car struck him.
Coming to terms with his son's death, Fazli called for harsher penalties for drivers who cause fatal accidents while under the influence of alcohol.
He also urged the authorities to review and tighten laws on driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Funeral prayers for Faris, who lived in Setiawangsa, were held at Mu'adz Bin Jabal Mosque before he was buried at Raudhatul Sakinah Taman Selaseh Muslim Cemetery in Batu Caves after Asar prayers today.
Earlier, police confirmed that Faris was killed and a lorry driver injured when they were hit by a car driven by a 26-year-old man whose blood alcohol level was above the legal limit. — BERNAMA
