MONROVIA, October 19, 2026 — The House of Representatives has invited Education Minister Dr. Jarso Jallah and the Superintendent of the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS) to appear before Plenary on Tuesday, October 20, to address ongoing student protests, teachers’ grievances and major policy concerns affecting public schools across Liberia.
The decision follows separate communications submitted to the House on Thursday, October 15, by Bong County District #2 Representative James M. Kolleh and River Gee County District #2 Representative Isaac Boye Choloplay Wuo.
The lawmakers raised concerns about the government’s newly introduced Primary School Tuition and Fees Waiver Policy and the implementation of its 100-School Construction Project.
In his communication, Representative Kolleh questioned the scope, financing and implementation of the tuition and fees waiver policy, citing limited public information about its application nationwide.
He requested clarification on which school fees have been abolished and how public primary schools that previously depended on Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) contributions and registration fees would sustain their operations.
Kolleh also expressed concern about the possibility of unauthorized fee collections by school administrators if adequate funding mechanisms are not established.
For his part, Representative Wuo called for legislative scrutiny of the government’s 100-School Construction Project, particularly the equitable distribution of school facilities across the country’s 15 counties.
He requested details on the number of schools completed and those still under construction, their locations, projected completion dates and measures instituted to ensure construction quality and accountability.
Meanwhile, Montserrado County District #16 Representative Dixon W. Seboe raised concerns about the continuing disruption of academic activities within the MCSS following a prolonged dispute between teachers and the government.
Seboe warned that the situation is affecting thousands of public school students, many of whom have been without regular classroom instruction for weeks.
His intervention follows recent street protests by MCSS students, who demanded the immediate return of their teachers to classrooms.
Hundreds of students from public schools on Bushrod Island took to the streets last week, blocking major roads and chanting slogans demanding the restoration of normal academic activities.
The students complained that the prolonged absence of teachers was undermining their education and creating uncertainty about the academic year.
Representative Seboe called for the appearance of the MCSS Superintendent, Education Minister Jallah and the leadership of the MCSS Teachers Association to explain the causes of the dispute, the status of negotiations and efforts to resume regular classes.
The House’s intervention comes amid growing concerns about disruptions in public education and the government’s implementation of key education policies.
The invited officials are expected to provide lawmakers with explanations regarding the teachers’ dispute, measures to restore classroom instruction and the implementation of government education initiatives.
