ⓘ Nintendo, GameStop
GameStop patrons searching for a Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 console may be out of luck. An insider learned locations have 0-5 units inbound by its release date. Nintendo has committed to restocks, but the handheld and Pro Controller could remain scarce until 2027.
With the Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 console releasing on October 29th, buyers are still hunting for the hardware. While stores like Best Buy plan midnight launch events, others will leave shoppers disappointed. GameStop told a retail insider that some locations expect no restocks of the system or Pro Controller.
Good news for scalpers
Nintendeal updated followers on the availability of the $519.99 handheld. At first, they reported GameStop had around 5 units inbound per store. However, sources later said many establishments would receive none by its release date.
The restock situation doesn’t look much more promising for The Legend of Zelda Switch 2 controller. At launch, shoppers may find 5 of the $99.99 accessories at each of the nearly 1,600 U.S. locations.
Meanwhile, Best Buy is inviting customers to a midnight launch celebration starting late on November 4th. Unfortunately, it coincides with the Ocarina of Time remake release date, which is after the Zelda Switch 2 console debuts. It’s unclear how many units Best Buy can reserve, but offering only a few will frustrate buyers.
Online vs. in-store
It’s more convenient to check tracker websites like HotStock than walk into GameStop. Still, even with alerts enabled, fans aren't having much better luck browsing online. Amazon, Walmart, and Target continue to replenish supplies sporadically. Regardless, listings often show sold-out signs before gamers complete checkout.
The popularity of special-edition consoles and the return of Ocarina of Time have generated unprecedented interest. Nintendo Latin America VP and General Manager Bill van Zyll recently admitted the company had underestimated demand. The handheld and Pro Controller are regularly sold out across North America, South America, and Europe.
The encouraging news is Nintendo likely won't stop producing the Zelda Switch 2 console and accessories anytime soon. If the Tears of the Kingdom Switch OLED pattern repeats, the company may manufacture the 40th Anniversary lineup well into 2027. Nevertheless, the shortage could extend through the holidays.
