The DP World Tour will not allow any player who signs up to the relaunched LIV Golf to retain membership in a significant strengthening of its stance.
A revamped LIV is due to begin in 2027 with new financing after losing backing from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) earlier this year, though there remains considerable uncertainty over its future.
It was revealed last week that Jon Rahm is set to leave the breakaway series, but an ultimatum from the organisation formerly known as the European Tour may force several others to make big calls.
In previous years, LIV-contracted players have been able to play in certain DP World Tour events under a conditional release system. with Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton and Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin among those to retain membership.
But from 2027, all will be asked to disclose their playing intentions for consideration when membership is decided. Only DP World Tour members are eligible for selection by Europe in the Ryder Cup.
"Players need to make a choice," Guy Kinnings, CEO of the DP World Tour, explained to BBC Sport.
"We have rules and regulations which are there to protect our tour and which our members must all abide by. Players who are not willing to comply with our rules and regulations should not be seeking to join our tour."
Hatton and Rahm have each played in the last two Ryder Cups under Luke Donald, and are highly likely to make his selection for Adare Manor next September if eligible.
Laurie Canter, Adrian Meronk and David Puig were among the other DP World Tour members granted conditional releases for LIV events in 2026. but now have until a 16 November to make a call.
Puig has indicated that he will not sign up for the relaunched series, while Sergio Garcia’s LIV contract has been terminated.
LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September as it restructures following the withdrawal of PIF’s financing after five years.
BC Partners Credit were confirmed last week as a new partner providing backing of up to $300m to support the next phase of LIV, which will include players becoming equity owners of the league and its teams.
