‘Premada Oorali’: This small film has taken the Kannada film industry by storm

Sandalwood has once again proved that it is one of India’s most unpredictable film industries. Premada Ooraliis the talk of Karnataka, and no, it doesn’t feature a big star. Barring Rangayana Raghu, the film stars an entirely new team. Yet, its box-office numbers are mind-boggling.

Released on September 25, 2026, the Manoj Kumar-directed film has so far collected ₹ 25 crore at the box office. For a film made on ₹ 2 crore budget, this result is unheard of in Kannada in 2026. This box office storm isn’t going to stop anytime soon, with a lifetime collection of ₹ 100 crore a strong possibility.

The film’s success has put the industry back on its feet, but more than that, Premada Oorali has done what perhaps no other Kannada movie achieved this year: breathed life back into theatres in B & C centres. Single screens in Raichuru, Kolar, Bidar, Madhugiri, Shidlaghatta, Ranibennur, Kadur, & so on are running to packed houses, with many of them operating after a couple of years. If the offline walkings are exceptional, the movie is on a rampage online, with more than a lakh tickets sold every day since last Sunday (September 27, 2026).

In Bengaluru, often the toughest market for Kannada movies due to stiff competition for screens from non-Kannada movies, Premada Oorali has withstood the challenge of big releases such as The Paradise starring Nani and Drishyam The Conclusion, the final instalment of a popular franchise. Centres known as “Telugu” and “Tamil” fortresses across the State have made room for Premada Oorali.

For someone who hasn’t watched the film yet, the hype can set unrealistic expectations. It’s a trademark “simple” movie set against a village backdrop, with a decent mix of father-son bond, a relationship drama, and focus on plight of farmers. “Sometimes, all you need is a simple movie,” says director Suri of Duniya and Tagaru fame. “It depends on what people want at a given point. We might think the audience is craving an extravagant dish, but they might want some plain, tasty rasam. People are moved to tears, which means the emotions have worked.”

The Kannada audience also has a history of rallying behind newcomers, with Mungaru Male and Duniya being prime examples. While Manoj had made just one movie (the National Award-winning Akshi), the lead cast — Thapaswini Poonacha, Shree Raam and Ramika Shivu — are unheralded names, with the latter two popular for their stints in TV serials. In fact, Premada Oorali is structured and filmed like a serial, and it’s worked to the team’s advantage, feels Harish Mallya, cinephile and curator, Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFes).

“Our audience has spent a big chunk of their lives watching serials. When a film speaks the same language, it connects with them. For them, theatre turns into a bigger, better version of the living rooms they are familiar with,” he says, as the family crowd continues to flock to theatres, reminding film romantics about the craze for Vishnuvardhan hits such as Yajamana (2000) and Suryavamsha (1999).

Premada Oorali’s unexpected successhas also left the industry confused. It has brought attention back to the feel-good genre, an idea Kannada filmmakers had almost forgotten. But should directors blindly follow a winning formula? And what about those who want to tell unique or complex stories with new-age sensibilities?

“Premada Oorali is a bona fide blockbuster, but to expect similar success all the time is unreasonable. You don’t always know why a film works. Maybe their marketing strategies worked, and the film reached the family audience. But if you bombard people with similar kinds of movies, you will lose their trust,” says a young film-maker on condition of anonymity.

For now, the film’s success has also filled directors with hope. From less than 50 shows in the first week, the movie is currently enjoying more than 700 shows. It is also set for its overseas and outside Karnataka release on October 09, 2026.
