The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Dave Roberts decided to pull Yoshinobu Yamamoto early in Game 2 of the NLCS, causing him to explain his reasoning afterward. Roberts went with a host of different pitchers in hopes of finding a better outcome after Christian Yelich rocked his second starter with a massive home run.
The Dodgers lost 7-4 on a rough day for their starting pitcher. Yamamoto hit a low not seen since 2025 in the World Series, according to Talkin’ Baseball.
“Tonight was the fifth time Yoshinobu Yamamoto hasn’t pitched three innings in an outing. The others: Game 7 of 2025 World Series relief, appearance; five runs (three earned) in 0.2 innings at Brewers July 2025; injury in June 2024; first start of career vs. Padres in Korea.

The Dodgers made a lineup change before the game but weren’t able to carry early momentum, giving up a run in the sixth inning and two runs in the eighth inning as the Brewers shut the door on their comeback attempt. Roberts’ team went through eight different pitchers including Yamamoto, with Kris Bubic, Brock Stewart and Edgardo Henriquez all ceding runs to the upstart Brewers.
Milwaukee is expected to send Robert Gasser to the mound for Game 3 in Los Angeles, while the Dodgers haven’t named a starter yet. Yamamoto remains one of the better pitchers in the national league, but he ran into a buzzsaw at American Family Field that few saw coming.
Roberts’ team has a lot of improvements and adjustments to make as the series shifts to Dodger Stadium, and Yamamoto could be needed later with everyone on high alert heading into Game 3.
