Kohima, Oct 16: The Angami Youth Organization (AYO) has renewed its demand for strict enforcement of the “One Government, One Tax” principle, warning of coordinated public agitation against illegal taxation, extortion and harassment of businesses and individuals by Naga political groups.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the AYO reaffirmed the 1993 resolution of the Angami Public Organisation (APO) advocating “One Government, One Tax”, saying the continued practice of multiple taxation had placed an unfair burden on the public and business community.
While reiterating its commitment to a peaceful and honourable resolution of the Naga political issue, the organisation said political aspirations could not be used to justify financial exploitation or intimidation of citizens.
The AYO observed that what was once regarded as political contributions had increasingly turned into what it described as commercial racketeering, adversely affecting the local economy. It maintained that no individual, business establishment, entrepreneur or organisation should be forced to meet illegal financial demands.
The organisation called on Naga national workers to refrain from harassment, extortion and unauthorised taxation. It also urged all Naga political groups to respect the sentiments of the Angami community and honour the existing resolution to prevent confrontation.
Warning of public agitation
Laying down four key directives, the AYO called for strict adherence to the “One Government, One Tax” principle, stating that individuals, businesses and contractors should not be compelled to pay taxes, annual fees or festive contributions to underground factions.
Expressing solidarity with the business community, the organisation warned that any threat, intimidation or attempt to shut down shops over non-payment of such demands would invite immediate and coordinated public agitation.
It also urged the Nagaland government and law enforcement agencies to take decisive action against illegal taxation and ensure the safety of citizens.
As part of its proposed measures, the AYO called on every District Executive Force to establish a dedicated, confidential helpline or grievance cell to enable people to report incidents of extortion and intimidation.
The organisation further urged the public to remain vigilant and united in upholding the directives.
It also asked citizens to use the Suraksha Police Nagaland portal and the Crime Branch helpline provided by Police Headquarters to report complaints and seek police assistance.
The AYO reiterated that the “One Government, One Tax” principle must be upheld to protect the public from multiple financial demands and ensure a safer environment for businesses and residents .
