Duke 19, Virginia 16: Five Key Plays
Duke traveled to Charlottesville on Friday night and escaped with a 19-16 win over the Virginia Cavaliers. Duke improves to 5-2, 2-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference on the season.
Walker Eget overcame an early injury to a finger on his passing hand to complete 14 of 25 passes for 211 yards.
The Duke defense intercepted Virginia quarterback Beau Pribula and forced a Pribula fumble as Duke won the turnover battle two to one.
Play One: On Duke’s first possession, the Blue Devils executed a four-play, 78-yard touchdown drive. On 1st down and 10, at the Duke 33-yard line, Walker Eget connected with Jonah Burton for a 35-yard pass completion to the Virginia 32-yard line. On the next play, Nate Sheppard broke free up the middle for a touchdown run.
Play Two: In the 2nd quarter, on 3rd down and goal to go at the Duke 5-yard line, Duke stopped Virginia running back Jekail Middlebrook and forced Virginia to settle for a field goal. The defense bent but it did not break.
Play Three: On the opening drive of the second half, Duke executed an eight play, 41 yard drive for a field goal, which cut Virginia’s lead to 13-10. The key play on the drive was a 31-yard pass completion from Walker Eget to Jared Richardson. Richardson made an excellent one-handed grab that was initially ruled incomplete, but video review overturned the call, as Richardson was clearly in bounds.
Play Four: Down 16-13, Duke executed a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to win the game. On 2nd-down and eight yards to go at the Virginia 28-yard line, quarterback Walker Eget tossed a backwards swing pass to running back Nate Sheppard, Sheppard executed the double pass to a wide open Brody Keefe for a touchdown.
Play Five: With 45 seconds remaining in the game, on 4th down and six yards to go, Virginia quarterback Beau Pribula’s pass was intercepted by Duke safety Patrick Smith-Young. Pribula was under pressure from Duke defensive end Tyshon Reed.
