Why isn't Nico lamaleava playing for UCLA? Bruins QB out for season after injury originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The 12th-ranked UCLA football team is off to an impressive start under head coach Bob Chesney. But the Bruins will have to continue without starting quarterback Nico lamaleava. The former five-star quarterback is out for the remainder of the season after suffering a knee injury in UCLA's victory over Oregon last week.
The injury is a significant setback for the undefeated Bruins, who entered the week with a 5-0 record. With unprecedented postseason hopes on the line, UCLA must now adjust its offense as it prepares to face Wisconsin on Saturday.
Iamaleava injured his left knee late in the second quarter against Oregon. He was tackled by Bear Alexander and Jerry Mixon while scrambling, with his leg appearing to twist during the play. UCLA's medical staff attended to the quarterback, who returned for one more play and threw an interception. However, he did not return to the field after halftime and was later seen without his uniform.
Although UCLA had not officially confirmed his status earlier this week, Chesney acknowledged there was "serious concern" about the quarterback's condition.
Iamaleava's absence leaves a significant gap in UCLA's offense. His ability to extend plays has helped the Bruins escape difficult situations, while his mobility forces opposing defenses to account for the passing game. This also creates opportunities for the rushing attack. He finishes the season with 982 passing yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions on 72-of-116 passing. He also recorded 144 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.
UCLA has two possible replacements for Iamaleava. Cal Poly transfer Ty Dieffenbach and Nico's younger brother, Madden lamaleava. Dieffenbach replaced the injured starter against Oregon, completing three of six passes for 43 yards and a touchdown.
Chesney indicated that Dieffenbach would get an opportunity to start against Wisconsin.
