Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw a sharp two-day outflow even as weekly data pointed to a broader streak of net inflows snapping
Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded combined outflows of $773 million over two consecutive trading days, according to AMBCrypto. The figure marks one of the larger short-term withdrawals from the product category in recent weeks. It arrives at a moment when flow data across the sector has been uneven.
Decrypt, reporting separately, framed the picture differently. It said Bitcoin ETFs had just snapped a two-week losing streak, implying a period of net positive flows overall. That report also noted a late-week slide, suggesting the outflows picked up again toward the end of the period covered.
Taken together, the two accounts describe a volatile stretch for Bitcoin ETF demand rather than a single clean trend. One reading emphasizes the scale of the recent two-day drawdown. The other emphasizes that, zoomed out, the funds had managed to turn a negative multi-week run into a positive one before slipping again. Both can be true depending on the exact window measured.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs have become a key gauge of institutional demand since their U.S. launch. Daily and weekly flow figures are closely watched because they offer one of the clearest proxies for how traditional finance participants are positioning in Bitcoin. Large outflows do not necessarily signal that holders are selling the underlying asset outright. They can also reflect rebalancing, arbitrage activity, or shifts between competing fund issuers.
AMBCrypto's report also pointed to onchain signals that it suggested might be running counter to the outflow narrative. Onchain data typically includes metrics such as exchange balances, holder accumulation patterns, or wallet activity tied to long-term versus short-term holders. Analysts sometimes use these measures to argue that price-sensitive selling is not matched by actual coin movement, though the specific indicators referenced were not detailed in the available reporting.
The divergence between ETF flow headlines and onchain commentary is not unusual. Fund flow data captures activity inside regulated wrapper products, while onchain data captures activity on the Bitcoin network itself. The two can tell different stories over short periods, especially when flows are driven by factors unrelated to spot demand, such as options expiries or futures basis trades.
Market participants watching these figures will likely wait for additional days of flow data before drawing firm conclusions. A single two-day outflow, even one as large as $773 million, sits within a broader multi-week pattern that has already shown both losses and gains.
Market Impact
Short-term ETF outflows of this size can weigh on sentiment, particularly if they coincide with broader market weakness. Traders often treat consecutive days of redemptions as a signal that institutional appetite is cooling, even when the underlying cause is technical rather than directional.
At the same time, the reported snapping of a prior losing streak suggests flow momentum had been improving before the late slide. If onchain signals genuinely show reduced selling pressure or continued accumulation, that could offer a counterweight to outflow-driven caution. Until further flow data confirms a clear direction, the picture for Bitcoin ETF demand remains mixed rather than decisively bearish or bullish.
The conflicting framing of recent Bitcoin ETF flow data underscores how short reporting windows can produce different headlines from the same underlying volatility. Investors will likely need several more sessions of flow data to determine whether the recent outflows mark a sustained shift or a temporary pause within a broader positive trend.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much did Bitcoin ETFs lose in outflows according to the reports?
AMBCrypto reported combined outflows of $773 million from spot Bitcoin ETFs over two trading days.
Did Bitcoin ETFs have net inflows or outflows over the broader period?
Reports differ on this point. Decrypt said the funds had just snapped a two-week losing streak, implying overall positive flows, before a late-week slide reduced that gain.
What are onchain signals and why are they mentioned alongside ETF flows?
Onchain signals refer to data drawn directly from the Bitcoin network, such as holder behavior or exchange balances. They are sometimes cited alongside ETF flow data to offer a fuller picture of demand, since the two data sources can diverge over short periods.
Does an ETF outflow mean investors are selling Bitcoin directly?
Not necessarily. ETF outflows reflect activity within the fund structure and can stem from rebalancing or arbitrage, rather than direct selling of the underlying Bitcoin.
