By Zoila Palma: France will deploy approximately 70,000 police and security personnel nationwide on Saturday as authorities prepare for another round of demonstrations following some of the country’s worst urban violence in years.
Today, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced the security measures warning that calls for violence and looting were circulating on social media.
President Emmanuel Macron convened a meeting of his defence council with senior ministers and officials to address the crisis, AFP reports.
He was also scheduled to meet with high school student representatives whose initial protests over school conditions have expanded into a nationwide movement expressing anger over the rising cost of living. Students are demanding improvements to school infrastructure and reforms to the Parcoursup university admissions system.
The government has sought to distinguish peaceful demonstrations from the looting, arson and destruction that accompanied protests last weekend.
