President Bola Tinubu has appointed Yusuf Bichi, a former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), as chairman of the Governing Board of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) in Abuja.
Bichi’s appointment was announced in a statement issued by Lilian Omo-Odigwe, Director of Coordination and Liaison.
The appointment followed a recommendation by the incumbent DSS Director-General, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi.
According to the statement, Bichi’s tenure will run for an initial four years, beginning October 22, 2026, in line with Section 4 of the National Institute for Security Studies (Establishment) Act, 2019.
He will succeed A.A. Gadzama as chairman of the institute’s governing board.
Bichi previously headed the DSS before handing over to Ajayi in August 2024.
His appointment places a former intelligence chief at the helm of the governing body of an institution focused on security studies and professional development.

Bichi began his career in the Security Division of the Kano State Cabinet Office before his transfer of service in 1984.
Over the course of his career, he gained experience in intelligence operations, security administration and leadership within Nigeria’s security sector.
His new role is expected to draw on that background in overseeing the affairs of the NISS and supporting its institutional mandate.
