Cristiano Ronaldo has received a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after leaving Portugal’s national team camp following a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the squad, the federation announced on Monday, 19 October.
Ronaldo left Portugal’s training base in Copenhagen ahead of the team’s Nations League match against Denmark earlier this month. He accused Jesus of breaking his word twice over his involvement in the team after the coach left him on the bench for Portugal’s match against Norway, where he did not play.
Jesus denied reaching any agreement with Ronaldo but left the door open for the forward’s return following Portugal’s 2-1 victory.
The federation’s disciplinary committee ruled that Ronaldo had deliberately violated Article 160, paragraph 1, of its disciplinary regulations.
However, the announcement did not specify which matches or activities the suspension would cover. It also did not clarify whether the time Ronaldo has already served under a provisional suspension would count towards the 30-day ban.
Ronaldo later apologised both for failing to greet supporters after the match against Norway and for leaving the national team camp. He stressed that he remained available for Portugal after serving any punishment arising from the incident.
Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença has said that everyone at the federation wants Ronaldo to return to the national team once the matter has been resolved.
