Angel Reese has become one of the biggest talking points of the WNBA Finals. Unfortunately for the Atlanta Dream star, the conversation has extended well beyond basketball.
Reese has delivered consecutive double-doubles to help Atlanta take a 2-1 lead against the Golden State Valkyries. Her 30-point, 16-rebound performance in Game 2 was followed by 21 points and 12 rebounds in a decisive Game 3 victory.
Yet online criticism has also focused on the teams’ pregame routine during the national anthem.
Players from both Atlanta and Golden State were off the court during the anthem before Finals games, drawing criticism from commentators and social media users. Reese became one of the central figures in the backlash, even though the routine involved both teams.
That distinction matters. The controversy is not solely about Reese, and the available evidence does not establish that she personally organized or directed the teams’ decision.
Still, her visibility has made her a natural target for debate. Reese is one of the league’s most recognizable players, and nearly every major moment involving her attracts strong reactions.
For supporters, her Finals performances demonstrate a player responding to pressure and helping her team pursue a championship. For critics, the anthem controversy has become another reason to scrutinize her public profile.
Meanwhile, Atlanta’s focus remains on the court. The Dream have taken control of the series and moved within two victories of the franchise’s first championship.
Reese’s performance is giving fans plenty to discuss. The larger question is whether the basketball will ultimately overshadow the controversy — or whether both storylines will continue competing for attention.
