Guwahati, Oct 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday distributed appointment letters to 439 candidates across multiple departments, marking another milestone in the government’s transparent and merit-based recruitment drive. The ceremony was held at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati.
The new recruits will serve in the Cooperation, Labour Welfare, Public Health Engineering, and Water Resources departments. With this round of appointments, the total number of government jobs offered under the current administration has reached 1,65,749.
Congratulating the candidates and their families, Sarma highlighted the revival of the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank, which had once faced regulatory intervention from the Reserve Bank of India. He noted that the bank, now managed through information technology and artificial intelligence, has regained profitability and recognition as a scheduled bank. On Sunday, 175 posts were filled in the bank, generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The Chief Minister also pointed to the establishment of a medical college in Guwahati under the Employees’ State Insurance scheme, which offers 50 MBBS seats to students from working-class families. Twelve Insurance Medical Officers were appointed to serve ESI dispensaries and hospitals.
Recruitment figures across departments were shared: 338 appointments in the Labour Welfare Department over five years, 184 Junior Engineers in Public Health Engineering, and 2,815 appointments in the Water Resources Department. Sarma emphasized that nearly 40 percent of Assam’s government workforce is now under 40 years of age, reflecting a generational shift.
He urged the newly appointed employees to uphold integrity, resist corruption, and adapt to technological advancements, warning that artificial intelligence would soon handle routine administrative tasks. He encouraged them to register on the IGOT platform to upgrade their skills and remain relevant in a rapidly changing workplace.
Calling the current period a “golden era” for Assam, Sarma said the transparency of recruitment has restored public trust, allowing candidates to proudly share their appointment letters without fear of allegations of corruption or political influence.
The programme was attended by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, Labour Welfare Minister Rameswar Teli, Public Health Engineering Minister Krishnendu Paul, Water Resources Minister Sushanta Borgohain, MLA and Apex Bank Chairman Biswajit Phukan, MLA Amiya Kanti Das, Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania, and other dignitaries.
