Russia Launches Massive Drone Attack on Sumy as Moscow Continues Strikes Despite Peace Talks

Russian forces launched a massive overnight drone attack on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy early Friday, Oct. 23, striking civilian infrastructure in three separate parts of the city, damaging residential buildings and injuring at least two people, Ukrainian authorities reported.

The attack was confirmed by Sumy Regional Military Administration chief Oleh Hryhorov, who said multiple Russian attack drones had reached their targets despite Ukrainian defensive efforts.

“Tonight, the enemy carried out a massive attack on Sumy using strike drones,” Hryhorov wrote on his official Telegram channel.

“Unfortunately, some enemy drones reached their targets.”

According to the regional governor, Russian forces struck civilian infrastructure at three locations across the city, including residential areas of the Kovpakivskyi district.

At least two residents were injured, although the severity of their wounds was still being assessed.

Medical personnel were providing assistance, while emergency crews worked at the impact sites.

The damage and casualty figures were preliminary, with authorities continuing to assess the consequences of the attack.

The strikes marked another night of Russian attacks on civilian areas in Sumy, a regional capital near the Russian border that has faced repeated drone, missile and aerial bomb strikes throughout the war.

Residential buildings in the Kovpakivskyi district sustained damage, while emergency services worked to establish the full extent of destruction.
