The New York Islanders have not impressed in the opening stages of the season, and Toronto has struggled even more. So when they met at Scotiabank Arena, both teams had a lot to prove.
Simon Holmström ensured the visitors went home in a better mood. Although Toronto dominated the shots in the final period, it was the Swede who sealed the game. First, he stole the puck in the offensive zone and, after combining with Bo Horvat and Matthew Schaefer, the 25-year-old scored to make it 3–1. Barely four minutes later, he made it 4–1 with an empty-net goal.
The Islanders have won four of eight games so far this season. Toronto’s grim record stands at three wins and six losses.
