Morocco’s Justice and Development Party (PJD) has nominated Idriss Azami to run for speaker of the House of Representatives, setting up a contest with Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) candidate Ahmed Touizi, sources told Hespress AR.
The vote is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
A PJD lawmaker told Hespress that the party’s general secretariat had informed its parliamentary group of Azami’s candidacy. The party has not held talks with other opposition groups to secure support for him, the source said.
The PJD had considered three candidates for the position: Azami, parliamentary group leader Abdellah Bouanou and Amina Maelainine.
Touizi is backed by PAM, which is leading a newly formed parliamentary majority alongside the Istiqlal Party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces and the Party of Progress and Socialism.
The new majority was announced Monday, a day before the vote to elect the next speaker of the House of Representatives.
