Kimi K3.1 Pro Review: Near-Opus Quality at 1/5th the Cost

Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra are strong performers in coding and complex reasoning. But how does Kimi K3.1 Pro compare? Moonshot AI’s latest model delivers competitive coding-agent benchmark results, a 1-million-token context window, and promising performance on financial tasks.

Beyond the headline numbers, the real question is how well it handles complex, multi-step tasks and whether its benchmark performance translates into practical results. We tested K3.1 Pro to see how it stacks up against leading models, where it performs well, and where it still falls short.

Key Features of Kimi K 3.1 Pro

K3.1 Pro is a post-trained version of Kimi K3, built with much larger reinforcement-learning compute across hundreds of task domains. Here is what that buys you.

Open Weights with 1M Token Context Window

K3.1 Pro is Moonshot’s most capable open-weight model to date. Its 1-million-token context lets it read entire codebases, contract bundles or years of reports in one go. Full weights release by November 4, 2026. Until then, it is available on Kimi.ai, Kimi Work, Kimi Code and the Kimi API.

Full-stack Coding

K3.1 Pro handles everything from quick fixes in real codebases to complete project builds. It works with game engines like Unity, Unreal Engine and Godot, and pairs them with web search and 3D generation. Kimi says its front-end pages and Three.js scenes show better composition, typography and animation than before.

Long-horizon Problem Solving

This is the most striking demo in the release. K3.1 Pro built a human walking simulator on an open-source anatomical model with 296 skeletal and 402 muscle components. Over 167 missions, the simulated human went from collapsing within seconds to walking for 11.2 seconds. When arm motion stayed wrong, the model stopped tweaking rewards, probed the simulator directly and fixed 36 errors in its shoulder-muscle calculations.

3D Modeling and Parametric Design

From a text brief, sketch or reference image, K3.1 Pro infers shape, proportions and spatial relationships to build usable 3D models. It is strongest at parametric work: mechanical parts, architectural models, configurable products and custom furniture. It can write and run Blender and CAD scripts without MCP connectors. The new 3D Make feature on Kimi.ai lets you edit models online and download them ready for 3D printing.

End-to-end Financial Workflows

Kimi positions K3.1 Pro as capable of complete financial workflows: modeling, investment analysis and source-grounded research. Internal scores improved over K3 on financial modeling, auditable research and simulated business operations.

Fewer Hallucinations

Finance work punishes made-up numbers, so Kimi targeted factual accuracy. On its hardest internal fact-checking test, the claim-level hallucination rate fell from 23.4% for K3 to 8.3%.

Controlled Cyber Capability

Kimi deliberately removed cyber-related training data from the open-weight release. Its offensive security capability sits below what the same pipeline would otherwise produce and behind frontier closed models. The goal: give defenders a capable model to audit their own code without pushing the frontier of attack capability.

Benchmarks: What Actually Impresses

K3.1 Pro does not top every chart, but on several it sits shoulder to shoulder with the best closed models. These are the results worth your attention.

• Terminal-Bench 4.0: An open model trailing Opus 5.5 by 0.7 points and beating GPT-6 Astra by 7.5 points on agentic coding is a real shift.
• BenchCAD: At 72.8 against Opus 5.5’s 73.0, K3.1 Pro’s raw spatial reasoning matches the strongest closed model when neither can lean on tools.
• OfficeQA Pro v2: K3.1 Pro posts the best reported score on retrieval, cross-document checks and multi-step numerical reasoning over real financial PDFs.
• Hallucinations drop: On Kimi’s hard test with tools, K3.1 Pro’s error rate is roughly half of Opus 5.5’s. GPT-6 Astra still leads on both hallucination tests.
• Big gains over its own predecessor. On Kimi Code Bench 3.0 Long-horizon, it scores 61.2% against K3’s 55.95%. Internal financial research rose from 58.8 to 70.4.

Task 1: 3D Rocket Launch Scene, Kimi K3.1 Pro vs Opus 5.5

Kimi K3.1 Pro produces a more cinematic rocket launch, with realistic details, varied camera angles, and atmospheric lighting. Claude Opus 5.5 delivers a strong ignition close-up, but its camera movement feels more static after liftoff. Kimi delivers the more convincing overall scene at roughly 5x lower cost and 4x faster generation time. However, without identical prompts and tools, this is a useful comparison, not a definitive verdict.

Task 2: Whale Breaching Scene

Kimi K3.1 Pro delivers the most complete whale-breach sequence, from the leap out of the water to the splash and final tail slap. Claude Opus 5.5 adds a rainbow in the spray, while GPT-6 Astra stands out for dramatic lighting. Gemini 4 Argon has vivid water, but its whale movement feels repetitive. It produces the most convincing overall action in this comparison, at roughly a quarter of Opus 5.5’s cost and less than half of Astra’s. The whale’s slightly plastic appearance is a drawback, and without identical prompts and setups, the results remain indicative rather than conclusive.

Conclusion

Kimi K3.1 Pro brings near-frontier capability to an open-weight model. It matches Claude Opus 5.5 almost point for point on agentic coding and raw 3D reasoning, leads on financial document analysis, and cuts its hallucination rate by nearly two thirds over K3. It is not a clean sweep. Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra still lead on tool-assisted 3D work, Astra hallucinates less, and many of the boldest claims rest on Kimi’s internal tests. The real verdict arrives with the weights on November 4, when independent teams can test it for themselves. For businesses that want frontier-level AI on their own infrastructure, K3.1 Pro is the strongest option yet.
