One of D2 football's great rivalries takes center stage Saturday as No. 1 Ferris State travels to No. 13 Grand Valley State for the latest edition of the Anchor-Bone Classic.
The annual showdown between Michigan neighbors a little over an hour apart always gets the juices flowing, though it's difficult to imagine the Lakers or anyone else finding a way to stop the Bulldogs.
The reigning national champions have played only one game this season that was decided by fewer than four touchdowns, a 28-14 victory at Central Washington a month ago. Ferris has won its three games since then by a combined score of 170-6, posting shutouts the last two weeks. Dual-threat QB Wyatt Bower leads the team in rushing and has eight TDs on the ground along with seven through the air.
Grand Valley will have an extra chip on its shoulder after absorbing an overtime loss last weekend at Michigan Tech, which is now ranked No. 14 in D2. The Lakers saw a fourth-quarter lead slip away in the final minutes and came up empty in OT, leaving them at 5-1 this season. QB Andrew Schuster (1,418 yards, 20 TDs, one interception) is the man to watch as GVSU tries to bounce back.
