The European People’s Party (EPP) has withheld public endorsement for the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) ahead of Serbia’s parliamentary elections, a move that EPP MEP Tomas Zdechovsky told Nova.rs sends a message that should not be ignored. Zdechovsky added that the suspension or expulsion of the SNS - which holds associate member party status within the political group - should be seriously considered.

Zdechovsky, who has previously been openly critical of the SNS for distancing itself from the EPP values, said in a written interview with Nova.rs that his concerns have not diminished and that he stands by his assessment that the SNS has moved outside the framework of EPP values.
“Under the current circumstances, I do not believe that the continuation of SNS membership should be treated as something that can be taken for granted. Without credible and demonstrable changes, I believe that a suspension or expulsion should be seriously considered,” Zdechovsky said.
He emphasized that the SNS cannot take European political support for granted, and that Serbian people should not interpret the Serbian Progressive Party’s affiliation with the EPP as an unconditional endorsement.
