Sri Lanka needed 55 from seven overs with Rathnayake and Liyanage well set, and then everything fell apart. Five wickets went for 15 runs, and Pakistan escaped Rawalpindi on Sunday with a 37-run win.
Salman Agha’s 107 from 90 balls had dragged them from four down to 305, Haris Rauf removed Liyanage and Shaheen Afridi finished with 3-55.
Yet Pakistan also looked uneasy against the short ball, and England will have noticed. They come on Tuesday 20 October with Harry Brook leading a side that beat both Sri Lanka and India at home this summer. The numbers lean their way too. England have won 57 of 92 ODIs against Pakistan, who have won 32, with three no results
Pakistan vs. England prediction: Who will win?
Pakistan’s total of 305 hid a fragile top half. They were four down inside 22 overs against Sri Lanka and needed a Salman Agha hundred to avoid a collapse, so England only need to find a way past the early order to put them under pressure again. Pakistan also struggled against the short ball, and a bowling group built around pace and bounce can test that weakness.
England have also bowled Pakistan out cheaply before, for 141 and 195 in July 2021 and 244 in November 2023. On a sunny afternoon in Rawalpindi, with Harry Brook’s side in strong recent form, they look the better team on paper
