PUTRAJAYA: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been ordered to investigate the death of detainee Noorizwan Zulkefly, 42, at the Cheras police headquarters following the discovery of several unusual injuries on his body.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail said police were awaiting the full laboratory report to establish the cause of death.
"From what we have seen, there are several unusual injuries that require attention, and I have asked the CID, especially its director Datuk M. Kumar, to investigate the matter as soon as possible," he said after the Spectrum International University College convocation ceremony today.
Khalid added that he had instructed the CID to issue public updates on the progress of the investigation.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called for a thorough, transparent and uncompromising investigation into Noorizwan's death in police custody.
Anwar also expressed condolences to the family, acknowledging their grief and anxiety as they sought answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Noorizwan's family had submitted a memorandum to Anwar at his house in Bandar Sungai Long yesterday, appealing for his intervention in the case.
The family, accompanied by Lawyers for Liberty, called for immediate action and justice following his death while in detention at the Cheras district police headquarters, where he had been held since Sept 19.
Noorizwan died at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz on Oct 1 after being taken there for treatment the previous day.
His preliminary post-mortem report stated that he had sustained multiple bodily injuries.
The family has called for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
