Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler have shared the first look at their characters in Miami Vice '85 as filming begins on the upcoming reboot of the classic 1980s crime series.
Jordan plays Ricardo Tubbs, while Butler takes on the role of Sonny Crockett. The film is based on the television series Miami Vice, which ran from 1984 to 1989 and followed two undercover detectives working in Miami, Florida. Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas played Crockett and Tubbs in the original series.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick and F1, the film is scheduled to release in cinemas on 19 May 2028.
The reboot will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, drawing inspiration from the original series' pilot episode and first season. The show became known for its influence on fashion, popular culture and filmmaking.
The cast also includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland and Michael Irby.
Dan Gilroy wrote the screenplay, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich for the original series. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft. Kosinski and Dylan Clark are producing the film for Universal Pictures.
Jordan, who won the Academy Award for best actor for Sinners last year, will next appear in The Thomas Crown Affair, which he also directed and stars in alongside Adria Arjona. Butler will next appear in A24's Enemies, co-starring Jeremy Allen White.
