SHILLONG, OCT 14: Deputy Chief Minister and NPP national vice-president Sniawbhalang Dhar on Wednesday claimed that voters of the 8 former UDP MLAs who joined BJP are now coming to NPP, and their joining will have no impact on the Shillong Lok Sabha byelection.
Dismissing apprehensions that UDP voters will shift to VPP, Dhar said, “Why do you say that? Please see as per record, during the last MP election almost all the voters went to VPP only, UDP has got 40,000 plus, NPP has got 1,80,000 plus, now they are coming to us, there is no effect at all.”
He asserted that the NPP candidate is gaining strength across the state.
“No, not at all. Our candidate keeps growing in strength from time to time, and he is gaining strength from all corners of the state,” Dhar said.
On campaign response, he said, “The response you have seen with your own eyes, as per the witness during the meeting, every meeting is a good turnout, it should be ok.”
Dhar said NPP’s advantage lies in its hardworking workers and its new candidate.
“Our workers work very hard, and our candidate is a new one and has got no reason and that is one of the reasons people like him. Frankly speaking, he is a very good gentleman, he is very mature with so much qualification, so people will look up to him,” he said.
He added, “From the NPP when we speak we speak as per the issue we never blame anybody.”
If NPP will request BJP not to field any candidate for the upcoming bypoll, Dhar said, “No, all parties are free to set up candidates, not issue in that, it will not affect at all.”
