KOTA BARU: Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has claimed that the Registrar of Societies (RoS) acted unlawfully by cancelling Perikatan Nasional's registration within 28 days, instead of the 30-day period stipulated by law.
Hamzah, who is also Parti Wawasan Negara president, said PN had received a letter from RoS and submitted its response within two weeks.
"The cancellation should not have been carried out before the 30-day period stipulated under the Societies Act had expired.
"The law in our country says 30 days. The home minister oversees RoS, and I know they have abused their powers by cancelling PN within 28 days. This is an injustice, and we strongly oppose it," he said at the Himpunan dan Munajat Penyatuan Ummah (Himpak) gathering at Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium.
Yesterday, the High Court allowed PN's application to stay its suspension and subsequent deregistration by the RoS on Oct 20.
Hamzah also questioned RoS's decision to appeal against the court ruling.
He said the move raised questions, as RoS was challenging a court decision concerning its own earlier action.
He added that any action against a political party for an alleged offence should follow the prescribed legal process.
He said PN was the country's largest opposition coalition and claimed that the authorities feared its influence.
"That is why I believe they are truly afraid of PN.
"We must rise and show that the people are with us in taking over the government and correcting everything they have done," he said.
