The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called for stronger intelligence-led policing to address security challenges in Sokoto and other parts of the country.
The Sultan made the call on Wednesday when the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 10, Ahmed Musa, paid him a courtesy visit at his palace in Sokoto as part of his familiarisation tour.
According to a statement issued by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Faruk Abdallah Ambursa, the Sultan emphasised the need for a shift towards intelligence-driven operations to tackle evolving security threats.
“It is time for us to shift towards intelligence-driven policing in tackling evolving security threats,” the Sultan said.
He also commended police officers and personnel serving in Sokoto State for their sacrifices in protecting lives and property and addressing security challenges in the region.
The Sultan expressed optimism that improved collaboration between the police and traditional institutions would strengthen security efforts across the state.
He also highlighted the importance of the forthcoming elections, offering prayers for peace, stability and orderly conduct throughout the campaign period and the general elections.
Earlier, Musa, who recently assumed duty as the 25th AIG of Zone 10, said his visit was aimed at familiarising himself with the traditional institution and formally announcing his assumption of office.
The AIG, who was accompanied by the Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Command, and other senior officers, said his previous experience as AIG in charge of Community Policing at the Force Headquarters in Abuja would help strengthen community-based security initiatives in the zone.
He assured the Sultan and residents of Sokoto of sustained efforts to tackle insecurity through enhanced community policing.
The visit ended with the Sultanate pledging continued institutional support and stronger collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force.
Zone 10 Police Command, headquartered in Sokoto, oversees police operations in Sokoto and Kebbi states.
Musa’s visit comes amid continuing security concerns in parts of the North-West, where intelligence gathering and cooperation between security agencies and local communities remain critical to efforts to combat banditry and other criminal activities.
