By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Prime Minister John Briceño is backing away from the idea of cutting allowances for area representatives and Cabinet ministers.
Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde had suggested reducing the allowances to show that the Government understands the struggles of ordinary Belizeans facing a high cost of living.
At first, Briceño said he would take the idea to Cabinet. But speaking to the media on Tuesday, he said he is now hesitant.
The Prime Minister argued that ministers use their allowances to help constituents who call daily for help with school costs, funerals, medical needs and other emergencies.
“Removing that allowance will only let them have less monies available to help people,” Briceño said. “It is not as if they are keeping that allowance for themselves.”
He said the proposal sounds good politically, but the reality is that ministers go beyond the call of duty every day.
Briceño said Cabinet has not yet had a serious discussion on the matter, but it could come up at the next meeting.
