At its core, running is the simplest sport in the world. Just put on your shoes, head out the door, and go. But of course, as all runners know, good gear can make every stride better. That’s where you and your big heart come in. These eight holiday gift ideas from REI are sure to inspire the runners in your life to enjoy this simple sport just a little bit more. Whether they’re after more miles, more speed, or just more comfort, here’s how to make it happen.
REI Co-op Swiftland Running Shorts
Some runners might not appreciate how much difference a great pair of running shorts can make. To those folks, we say: Wait until you unwrap the Swiftland shorts and take them out for a spin. These ultralight, stretchy, quick-drying shorts—which come in multiple lengths to satisfy everyone’s preferences—are so comfortable you’ll never want to take them off. A brief-style liner contributes to the luxury factor, and multiple low-profile pockets secure small items.
Garmin CIRQA Smart Band
A lot of runners today want the data a smartwatch provides, but not the distraction of wearing one. That’s what makes the CIRQA Smart Band so compelling: It covers almost the full spectrum of activities and statistics offered by Garmin’s watches, all in a minimalist, comfortable fabric design that lacks a screen. Running without distraction is now back on the menu, but the training and tracking advantages of the Garmin ecosystem are still right at your fingertips.
Altra Torin 9 Road-Running Shoes
Runners love Altra shoes for their zero-drop design and wide toe boxes, and the Torin 9 takes that foundation and adds elements that road warriors will appreciate. The Vibram XS DURA outsoles are exceptionally grippy, and Altra’s new P35X dual-density midsole features firmer foam on the outside and softer material on the interior for a feel that’s both planted and cushioned. Breathable mesh and Altra’s high-quality construction make this a great gift for any runner who lives the zero-drop lifestyle.
Shokz OpenRun Pro2 Headphones
No surprise that runners love an audio boost, but even the best playlist or podcast falls short if the headphones aren’t run-ready. No issue there with the OpenRun Pro2, which combines impeccable audio quality (thanks to bone conduction and air conduction) with the situational awareness offered by its open-ear design. A secure fit, crystal-clear phone calls, and a long battery life seal the deal.
Clif Bloks Energy Chews
Here’s a stocking stuffer for every runner—correction, everyone—on your list. Clif Bloks stand out for their combination of calories, electrolytes, and yummy flavors (tip: save some of the salted watermelon for yourself), and are already an essential part of many runners’ nutritional strategy. With sleek packaging that slips into a pocket or waist pack and easily chewable pieces, they’re the perfect solution to on-the-go fueling.
Amphipod Profile Lite 20 Bottle Waist Pack with Jett-Lock
If you know a runner who likes to hit the road with everything they might need, this waist pack will impress. It holds everything—snacks, phone, keys, a wallet, and an included 20-ounce water bottle in the insulated holster—all while keeping the load secure and bounce-free. Even fully loaded, the pack’s padded mesh backpanel ensures total comfort. Forecast iffy? An adjustable bungee stows a rain or windshell.
HOKA Clifton 11 Road-Running Shoes
When it feels like you’re running on a cloud, you know it doesn’t get any better. So give the Clifton 11, and just watch the smiles. The 41-millimeter stack height, pronounced rocker, and HOKA’s legendary midsoles soften every stride, and some notable improvements for this new model make the Clifton even more of a joy to wear. Its sockliners are softer, and the updated mesh uppers hug the foot and breathe even better. Pounding the pavement? No thanks. Running on a cloud? Yes please.
Hydro Flask Micro Hydro Vacuum Water Bottle with Screw Cap
The best thing after a hot run? A cold drink waiting in the car. Make it come true with the Micro Hydro Vacuum Water Bottle. This compact, double-wall vacuum-insulated bottle can keep liquids cold for 24 hours (or hot for nine), and it’s just the right size to stash in a vehicle’s cupholder. There’s a color for everyone, and durable stainless steel means they’ll enjoy this gift for a long, long time.
