Relebohile Mofokeng is facing a pivotal career decision just six months into his European journey, with scouts from Lille and Bayer Leverkusen tracking the 21-year-old Bafana Bafana winger at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.
Turkish global transfers reporter Ekrem Konur reported that both clubs have been observing Mofokeng closely, with potential offers in the region of €15 million (approximately R276 million) expected to materialise in January 2027.
Mofokeng's Rapid Rise in Belgium
Mofokeng joined Union SG in July 2026 in a reported €3.5 million deal from Orlando Pirates, and his adaptation to Belgian football has been immediate. Across all competitions, he has contributed six goals and two assists in 14 appearances for club and country.
His competitive debut for Union SG came in the Belgian Super Cup on 31 July against Club Brugge, where he came off the bench and converted the decisive penalty in a shootout. He then scored on his Belgian Pro League debut against K.V.C.
Westerlo on 8 August, and followed that with a standout display in a 2-0 win over Royal Antwerp. In the UEFA Europa League, he netted in Union SG's 3-0 victory over Viktoria Plzeň on 17 September. Most recently, he provided an assist in a 3-0 Belgian Cup win over KFC Nijlen, further bolstering his case for a starting role under coach David Hubert.
Beyond Lille and Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Brighton and Napoli have also reportedly held internal discussions about the South African international.
Stay or Go: The January Dilemma
Mofokeng is contracted to Union SG until 30 June 2030, with an option for an additional year, giving the club considerable leverage to resist any mid-season approach. Belgium has historically served as a productive development ground for African players, and a full season of consistent first-team football alongside European competition could push his valuation well beyond current estimates.
However, Mofokeng's early output suggests he may already be equipped for a step up. His composure under pressure, particularly the Super Cup penalty, points to a mental maturity that few players his age possess. Bayer Leverkusen have a well-established track record of developing young players within a competitive environment, while Lille have consistently identified and advanced African talent through their structure.
A move to one of Europe's top five leagues within 12 months of leaving South Africa would be unprecedented for a local player, but his performances have given the debate genuine substance. A €15 million transfer would also represent a significant profit for Union SG and a life-changing financial outcome for Mofokeng, who grew up in Sharpeville.
As the January transfer window draws closer, the question of whether Mofokeng consolidates his foundation in Belgium or makes an early leap to elite football will be among the most closely watched decisions in South African football.
