The Green Bay Packers knew before the 2026 regular season began that they wouldn't have Josh Jacobs at their disposal. A domestic altercation back in May created a messy legal situation, forcing NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to place Jacobs on the Exempt List until further notice.
Many believed that Jacobs being on the Commissioner's Exempt List was a way of making him serve an unofficial suspension. After six games or so, perhaps Jacobs would come off the list and play for the Packers. We're now in Week 6, and Jacobs doesn't seem anywhere close to playing soon; in fact, he may have been dealt a season-ending blow this week.

Josh Jacobs is trying everything to stop video of altercation from being released
On Thursday, ESPN's Packers beat writer Rob Demovsky reported that Jacobs "has filed a civil suit seeking a permanent injunction restricting access to records from his May 23 altercation". There is a video of the altercation that Jacobs clearly doesn't want to see the light of day. According to Demovsky, "the NFL is trying to get the video as part of its investigation".
Jacobs wants to avoid that. He argues that releasing the video would reveal personal details about both the woman and his own home, which could emotionally hurt the woman in question while also putting his own safety at risk - since the video shows the intricacies of his garage.
Whether Jacobs' appeal works is yet to be determined. But Packers fans have given up hope of seeing Jacobs play this season, since it seems clear that the video in question might be damning to his case; that would be the most obvious reason that he doesn't want it released.
