It’s somehow been eight years since Crazy Rich Asians arrived and became a box-office hit. And now, it appears it’s finally time to return to the world of the Young family.
HBO announced that it’s moving forward with a sequel series, bringing several familiar faces back for an extended chapter in the story of Singapore’s elite, expanding on the worlds of Kevin Kwan’s books.
It will reunite several of its original stars, too. According to Variety, the upcoming drama is set to star Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng, and Michelle Yeoh, with the creative team behind the 2018 film also returning.
Here’s everything we know about the Crazy Rich Asians series.
What will the Crazy Rich Asians series be about?
HBO’s Crazy Rich Asians series will pick up after the events of the 2018 film, which followed New York-based economics professor Rachel Chu (Wu) as she traveled to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding), and discovered that he belonged to one of the wealthiest families in the country. They then went through a series of challenges, and the film ended with Nick proposing to Rachel, setting the stage for the next chapter of their relationship.
While HBO has not yet shared specific plot details, the series will have eight episodes to further explore the characters and world introduced in Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels. Kwan’s original 2013 book was followed by China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, published in 2015 and 2017, respectively.
Who is in the cast?
Several members of the original film’s cast are set to reprise their roles. Wu will return as Rachel Chu, Golding as Nick Young, and Chieng as Nick’s cousin Eddie Cheng. Yeoh will also return as Eleanor Young, Nick’s formidable mother.
It remains unclear whether other familiar faces from the original film, including Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Ken Jeong, and Nico Santos, will return. HBO has not announced additional casting.
Who is behind the show?
Malaysian producer and screenwriter Adele Lim, who co-wrote the screenplay for the original film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. She will be joined by Kwan, director Jon M. Chu, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson as executive producers.
In a statement, Lim called this a “family reunion.”
She also described the project as the sequel fans had been waiting for, adding that opting for a multi-episode route (instead of the original movie sequel plans) would allow the team to delve further into Kwan’s characters and fictional world.
“Our writers room is humming and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with,” she said.
When will it premiere?
HBO has not announced a premiere date for the series yet, but it did confirm that production will begin in 2027. An exact start date and filming locations have not been confirmed.
This story will be updated as more details become available.
