BAROBO, Surigao del Sur — A decade of cultural pride and ancestral maritime lore takes center stage as this coastal gateway celebrates the 10th Sarapang Festival alongside its 66th founding anniversary from Oct. 17 to 24.
The municipal government officially began the countdown to the weeklong celebration following the release of its promotional slate on Tuesday, Oct. 13. This year’s festivities center on community resilience, cultural diversity, and grassroots economic resurgence.
Institutionalized under Municipal Ordinance No. 4, Series of 2017, the research-based cultural festival takes its name from the sarapang, a traditional multi-pronged fishing spear wielded by early Kamayo settlers along the Pacific coast and mangrove estuaries.

Highlighting this year’s 10th edition is the debut of “Hiyas Sining Barobo” on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Barobo Municipal Gymnasium. Organizers said the newly conceptualized pageant departs from conventional beauty tilts, focusing instead on indigenous identity, ancestral heritage, and the role of women as keepers of local tradition.
The weeklong calendar also features sports tournaments on Oct. 17 and 21, nightly Hudyaka sing Dum musical and cultural presentations, and a culminating civic-military parade on Saturday, Oct. 24, marking the town’s official charter day.
Local officials, in coordination with the Philippine National Police and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, have finalized security, traffic rerouting, and crowd-control plans to manage the influx of visiting balikbayans and regional travelers heading to the town’s premier cold springs, beachfronts, and private island resorts. /mcm
