Have you ever wondered what it might be like to watch your son win a national football championship in college? Or watch your son give an acceptance speech after winning the Heisman Trophy? How about watching your son play as starting quarterback in the Super Bowl?
Robin Burrow does. And she's featured in episode one of The Enquirer’s special-edition podcast series “Beyond Sunday" spotlighting five moms of Cincinnati Bengals players.
The podcast will publish on Cincinnati.com every Wednesday morning from Oct. 21 to Nov. 18.
Other special guests include Donyale Turner, mother of Cincinnati Bengals cornerback DJ Turner II, and Nikki Mims, mother of Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Amarius Mims.
Robin Burrow talks meeting her husband, raising her family in Ohio, why she loves football, her favorite part of game day and more
Among the conversation topics:
- What a typical game day in Cincinnati is like for her and her family as they get ready to watch the Bengals play.
- How growing up in Nebraska with three brothers of her own, she followed football, but then when she met her husband, Jimmy, a college football coach at Iowa State, she embraced the sport on a different level. In addition to Iowa State, Jimmy coached at North Dakota State, where Robin moved with him, then ended his coaching career in Athens, where he served as the defensive coordinator at Ohio University for 14 seasons (2005-2018).
- How she realized during Joe's sophomore season at Athens High School that he was destined to play the sport at the next level. “He could throw that ball and put it exactly where it needed to be,” she said. During Joe’s senior year, Robin said, people would drive to Athens from all over, including West Virginia, to watch Joe play. “They would score 50 or 60 points in a half,” Robin said.
- The experiences of recruiting visits at Ohio State, Cincinnati and LSU and details of how Joe ended up at LSU after his stint at Ohio State.
- When Robin and Jimmy attended the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York City where Joe won the prestigious award. Joe gave an emotional speech, and it was a night Robin will never forget. “We were at the Heisman with all of the former Heisman winners. It’s really almost hard to describe,” she said.
Advice for a mom about to embark on a journey with her son playing football: “First and foremost, cherish every moment,” Robin said. “Take pictures, just always remember that they are your kid. They need your support and unconditional love.”
The full conversation with Robin Burrow is available on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music. Next week: Donyale Turner, mother of Cincinnati Bengals cornerback DJ Turner II.
