Travel blogger Tomiko Harvey shared the unusual encounter on social media, disclosing that the emotional episode lasted three hours.
In a story that sparked a heated debate online, the blogger recounted how a fellow passenger asked her to switch seats so she could sit closer to her husband.
Tomiko, who was travelling from Istanbul to Washington after visiting Kazakhstan following her father's death, refused to give up her aisle seat for the woman's preferred arrangement.
According to her, the woman wanted to take her seat so she could be closer to her husband during the lengthy journey.
However, Tomiko claimed that the woman's husband was seated just two rows ahead of them in a middle seat and spent much of the flight sleeping with his headphones on.
The situation took an emotional turn when the woman began crying and continued to weep for approximately three hours.
Tomiko, who documented the encounter in a social media video, said she eventually asked the distraught passenger whether someone had died, given the length of time she had spent crying.
"She said nobody died. She just missed her husband and whose shoulder would she lay her head on," she recounted.
The blogger described the episode as "the ultimate white tears", expressing frustration at what she considered an unreasonable expectation that another passenger should give up a preferred seat.
Tomiko also questioned whether the woman's distress was justified, particularly because her husband was only a few rows away rather than on a different flight or in another location.
The seatmate's reaction prompted Tomiko to make a sarcastic remark after the plane landed, congratulating her for surviving 10 hours without her husband.
She further joked that the incident had prompted her to reconsider her own marriage, quipping that she clearly did not love her husband enough.
Tomiko argued that passengers who want to travel together should book seats together or pay for seat selection where the option is available.
Although airlines may sometimes accommodate voluntary seat swaps, passengers are not generally obliged to surrender their assigned seats simply because another traveller requests it.
Her account resonated with social media users, with her post reportedly attracting more than 90,000 likes as commenters weighed in on the disagreement.
