The Punjab Communication and Works (C&W) Department will begin rehabilitating nine roads in Rawalpindi by the end of October after the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) allocated Rs. 1.6 billion for the projects.
The Punjab Highways Department will carry out the rehabilitation work on roads falling within the municipal corporation’s jurisdiction. A senior district administration official told Dawn that work would begin after the contract-awarding process was completed.
The nine projects include Khayaban-i-Sir Syed Road at a cost of Rs. 213.466 million, Bokra Road at Rs. 226.454 million, and the upgradation of 5th Road at Rs. 138.525 million.
Other projects include the rehabilitation of Rawal Road from Ali Nawaz Chowk to Murree Road for Rs. 241.894 million, Chandni Chowk–Commercial Market Road for Rs. 115.718 million, and Railway Workshop Road for Rs. 247.871 million.
The remaining projects cover China Market–Gordon College Road at Rs. 138.318 million, Satellite Town 4th B Road at Rs. 141.007 million, and Band Khana Road at Rs. 214.417 million. The official said the divisional administration assigned the work to the C&W Department because the RMC lacked the capacity to undertake the projects itself.
Separately, three major road projects previously managed by the Rawalpindi Development Authority and District Council have also been handed over to the C&W Department. These include the reconstruction of Chaudhry Bostan Khan Road from Chaklala Scheme-III to the Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench, Chakri Road, and the road leading toward Falcon Chowk along Islamabad Expressway.
