The Fulani community in Adamawa State has announced a boycott of markets across Song Local Government Area over alleged maltreatment of its members by local authorities.
The boycott means herders will stop supplying cattle to markets, while milk sellers will suspend sales across the area.
According to a Radio Nigeria report, the elders’ committee that announced the decision alleged that the local government leadership had overseen the destruction of several Fulani settlements in the past three months.
The committee also alleged that Fulani leaders were summoned by local authorities, subjected to inflammatory remarks and detained for three days over what it described as unsubstantiated allegations.
The Chairman of Adamawa Concerned Citizens, Alhaji Gambo Nakura, corroborated the account, alleging that efforts by prominent indigenes of Song to secure the release of the detained leaders were unsuccessful until a court in Yola ordered their release three days later.
One of those arrested, Haruna Usman, said their arrest and detention took place on Friday, October 2, 2026.
He described the alleged punitive actions as inappropriate, arguing that associations within the Fulani community had established mechanisms for addressing members’ misconduct.
Usman said the associations should have been approached to investigate suspicious activities and resolve disputes instead of the local government leadership resorting to what he described as intimidation.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Song Local Government leadership were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The development comes amid growing tensions between farmers and herders in the area over alleged destruction of farmlands.
Daily Post reported on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, that farmers from several communities across Song LGA staged a protest over the alleged repeated destruction of their farmlands by herders.
The farmers, who presented their grievances at the local government headquarters in Song town, accused herders of allowing their cattle to stray into farmlands and destroy crops.
During the protest, the council’s Information Officer, Vincent Baldeno, who received the farmers on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Idris Yahaya, appealed for calm and assured them that their grievances would be addressed.
